Coming Back from Blogworld in Las Vegas - Lots to talk About.

I have been in Las Vegas for three days at the Blogworld and New Media Conference. Lots going on in this new medium. Very exciting times…lots of diversity of people involved. I thought I would be the only one without tattoos and body piercing. I was very wrong. Met lots of interesting people who are all very interested in facilitating the conversation and doing so responsibly.

Sorry I have not been posting as regularly but I am back late Saturday. Checking headlines good to see Harper relenting on an inquiry on the Mulroney-Schreiber affair. Sometimes you have to put away your “principles” and to the right thing.

The discover of carcinogens in the Athabasca river is going to be a hot story that ties in health, environment and the Alberta economy into an integrated whole…too late coming and a prime political challenge.

Curious as to the Alberta privacy commissioner comments that certain government contracts with Murray Smith and Rod Love have no impediments to public release and Premier Stelmach’s refusal to do so…don’t know enough facts yet but this si one to be dug into and followed. Political credibility is on the line here.

Here in Nevada the US economy is now a topic that rivals homeland security as a major concern. The musings by Chinese officials that they may start to diversify their treasury reserve cash holdings (that are enormous) beyond US Dollars has shocked and shaken the confidence down here. Not a major deal yet but American Pride it is an issue with legs.

Harper again is demonstrating that he is a great leader and continues to earn respect from Canadians. I am glad he is seeking advice from a third party individual to determine whether or not an inquiry is fully warranted.

I hope Harper calls for an inquiry into why tehe $42 million dollars lost from the sponsorship has still not been repaid by the Liberals. I am sure he would receive multi-party support.

  3. eric - this is a silly comment...and I have had enough experience with your thoughts and intelligence through comments on this Blog to know this is not your best thinking.

The LPC was found to have received some of this money that was proven to be part of funds improperly paid to the party from the fraudulent actions of others - and they repaid it to Canadians, something just over $2m as I recall.

I will give you some credit in this comment for not perpetuating the now disproven allegation that "over $250m was missing." It is not $42m either but you are getting closer to the truth...once you give credit for the cash recovered and the on-going litigation for even more recovery you will see a much smaller amoount outstanding than $42M.

Adscam fraud was not perpetuated by the LPC. It was a combination of poor oversight and abuse of discretion by the Chretien PMO, and key lapses in ovesight by some senior members of the bureaucracy and the absolute dishonesty of some key individual Montreal based party volunteers action without party approval or knowledge and the unscrupulous ethics of some Quebec based businessmen...many of whom are now in jail.

Read Gomery and stop your unfounded partisan posturing. Stick to the facts...and just the facts eric - the world is complex enough without such unfounded extrapolations beyond the known.

I will not accuse you of spin on this comment because it is clearly a posturing based defensive Conservative partisanship - but it is tempting to frame you in those terms based on this comment.
